Minoxidil for hair loss
Topical minoxidil has been used for decades for hair loss. There is growing evidence supporting use of oral minoxidil in a low dose is equally if not more effective in reversing hair loss. It is FDA approved for treatment of hypertension in higher doses, but not being used off-label for hair loss. Dose is 2.5 mg daily, and a follow up will be needed at 4 months to discuss effectiveness/tolerance.
Pros:
· Up to 80% of men will experience thickening and enhanced pigmentation of body hair after 3-6 weeks of treatment
· It is a safe, older medication
· Easy once daily pill – no messy creams or scalp irritation
Cons:
· It will be necessary to take minoxidil indefinitely. Studies who that within one to six months after stopping treatment, the hair growth will stop and patient appearance will be restored to what it was prior to treatment
· Oral minoxidil can cause hair growth in areas of the body other than the head
· Will not work on areas where your hair loss has been chronic (shiny, smooth areas of absolutely no hair).
Who should not use minoxidil:
· Not recommended if you have an allergy to the medication
· Anyone with a history of pheochromocytoma
